Why I’m Switching from Plastic to Glass (And Why You Might Want To, Too)
If you’ve been following along at A Natural Edit, you know I’m all about making simple swaps that feel modern, manageable, and realistic. Not overwhelming. Not extreme. Just better choices over time.
One of the biggest shifts in our home over the last couple of years? Switching from plastic to glass. Plus, I have a love for glass. It's just so...beautiful!
And I’m not just talking about food storage containers.
I’m talking about bakeware, drinkware, leftovers, utensils… and even appliances like air fryers.
Let’s talk about why this matters — and how to make the switch without feeling like you have to replace everything overnight.
Why Move Away From Plastic?
Plastic is everywhere. It’s convenient, lightweight, and cheap. But when it comes to food and heat, there are a few concerns many families are becoming more aware of:
Potential chemical leaching (especially when heated)
Scratches that trap bacteria
Lingering odors and stains
Environmental impact
Even “BPA-free” plastic isn’t always the long-term solution people think it is. Many safer-living advocates recommend reducing plastic contact with food whenever possible — especially when heat is involved.
That’s where glass literally shines.
The Benefits of Glass
✔ Non-porous (won’t absorb stains or smells)
✔ Easy to clean
✔ Long-lasting
✔ Recyclable
✔ Heat-safe (when used properly)
✔ Looks beautiful and minimal in your kitchen
And let’s be honest — opening your fridge to neatly stacked glass containers just feels elevated.
Start Here: Glass Food Storage Containers
If you're new to reducing plastic, this is the easiest first swap.
Look for:
Tempered glass
BPA-free lids (many still have silicone or plastic lids — that’s okay for gradual progress)
Oven and dishwasher safe options
Glass food storage recommendations:
Don’t Forget: Bakeware & Mixing Bowls
Many of us still use plastic mixing bowls or old non-stick bakeware that’s scratched and worn.
Glass baking dishes (like Pyrex or Anchor Hocking) are:
Durable
Non-reactive
Free from coating concerns
Beautiful enough to serve from
This swap is especially important for anything that goes in the oven.
Bye Bye Plastic Utensils
Within the last few years, a lot of hype has come out about plastic utensils. I jumped on that band wagon as I was in need of new utensils. So, I tossed all the old plastic utensils and set out on the search for silicone. Sadly, like plastic, silicone is not biodegradable, but it doesn't release the harmful chemicals when heated.
This set was the replacement I landed on:
The One People Don’t Think About: Air Fryers
Traditional air fryers often have non-stick coated baskets. Over time, those coatings can scratch, chip, and wear down.
We recently replaced our beloved Ninja Foodi air fryer. We LOVED the Foodi and would have gotten another one if it didn't have the non-stick coating. So, since we were in need of a new one, this put me on the path to look for a healthier version.
Fingers crossed this new one works as long as our Foodi!
The option we chose:
If you’re trying to reduce synthetic coatings in your kitchen, look for:
Air fryers with glass bowls
Stainless steel interior models
Units without Teflon-style coatings
While not 100% plastic-free (most appliances still have exterior plastic), reducing heated plastic contact is a meaningful step.
A Realistic Way to Transition
You don’t need to throw everything away.
Here’s the A Natural Edit approach:
Replace items as they wear out.
Prioritize items that heat food.
Gradually build a collection of quality glass pieces.
Focus on progress — not perfection.
This is about reducing exposure and creating a cleaner, calmer kitchen space over time.
What I’ve Noticed Since Switching
No more tomato-stained containers.
No weird leftover smells.
Food reheats better.
My fridge looks organized and intentional.
I feel better about what my family’s food touches.
And honestly? That peace of mind matters.
